The Foundation
The Constitution of India is the supreme set of rules that governs how our country works. Think of it as the rulebook for the entire nation โ it defines who holds power, what rights every citizen has, and how the government must behave.
26 November 1949 โ the day our Constituent Assembly adopted the Constitution. Celebrated as Constitution Day.
26 January 1950 โ Republic Day. India became a republic governed by its own Constitution.
With 448 articles and 12 schedules, India has the world's longest written constitution for a sovereign nation.
Our Journey
The Sepoy Mutiny โ India's first major uprising against British rule โ sparked a national consciousness that would eventually lead to full independence.
Founded in 1885, the INC became the primary vehicle of the Indian independence movement, uniting leaders from across the subcontinent.
Mahatma Gandhi transformed the independence movement with non-violent civil disobedience โ Salt March, Non-Cooperation, Quit India Movement.
The Constituent Assembly convened to draft the Constitution. Dr. B.R. Ambedkar chaired the Drafting Committee and shaped India's foundational document.
India achieved independence from British rule. Jawaharlal Nehru delivered his iconic "Tryst with Destiny" speech at midnight.
After 2 years, 11 months, and 18 days of deliberations, the Constituent Assembly adopted the Constitution. Now observed as Constitution Day (Samvidhan Diwas).
India became a fully sovereign republic. The Constitution came into force, replacing the Government of India Act 1935. Dr. Rajendra Prasad became the first President.
